How to prepare vector artwork for screen printing and DTF
Prepare logos and illustrations for screen printing, direct-to-film transfers, and apparel production with clean colors, practical detail, and correct export files.

Prepare screen-print artwork as intentional spot-color shapes with clean separations and details that survive the mesh and ink. Prepare DTF artwork at the final print dimensions with transparent edges and enough raster resolution for photographic detail. SVG is excellent for logos and flat illustrations in both workflows, but it is not automatically a production-ready separation.
Screen printing and DTF need different files
Both methods decorate garments, but their production constraints differ. Screen printing normally uses one screen per color. DTF prints a composite image onto transfer film and can retain gradients, textures, and many colors.

Build a deliberate color palette
Raster logos often contain dozens of near-identical colors along anti-aliased edges. Those shades are not separate inks. Reduce the artwork to the intended brand colors before creating separations.
For screen printing, name colors consistently and confirm whether the printer expects spot-color swatches, separated pages, or individual files. For DTF, check bright edge pixels on both light and dark backgrounds because the white underbase can make a faint halo visible on fabric.

Set detail limits before production
The smallest viable line depends on mesh, ink, garment texture, print size, and the shop's process. Instead of copying a universal number, ask the printer for its minimum positive and negative line widths.
Review these elements at the final physical size:
- Thin gaps inside letters and icons
- Small isolated shapes that may disappear
- Closely spaced outlines that can merge
- Distressed textures with hundreds of tiny fragments
- Halftone dots near the shop's minimum printable size
If a detail has no visual value at viewing distance, remove it. Simpler artwork is easier to separate, register, print, and reproduce consistently.
Convert gradients with intent
A smooth screen gradient needs halftone dots. Choose the dot pattern, angle, and density with the print provider; then inspect the vector or raster halftone at output size. Random auto-tracing of a gradient can create thousands of irregular shapes that are harder to expose and print.

Preflight the final delivery
Before sending files, confirm:
- The artboard matches the intended print dimensions.
- Every screen-print color is intentional and separable.
- Text is outlined or the required font is supplied.
- Transparent DTF edges are free from pale or dark halos.
- The printer receives a visual reference showing expected colors and placement.
Keep an editable SVG or design source as the master. Export the exact PDF, EPS, SVG, or transparent PNG requested by the production partner rather than assuming one format fits every RIP or shop.
