How to prepare vector artwork for packaging and commercial print

Ask the converter or printer for its production template instead of rebuilding a dieline from a screenshot.

Recover weak logos carefully

Supplier portals and old documents often contain only small raster logos. Search for an approved vector first. If none exists, use the print-ready vector workflow and compare the reconstructed result against official references.

Check:

  • Letterform counters and spacing
  • Trademark and registration symbols
  • Thin keylines around logos
  • Known brand colors
  • Minimum-size versions and simplified marks

A vectorized logo should become an approved derivative asset, not quietly overwrite the original brand source.

Separate vector and raster responsibilities

Logos and flat graphics benefit from vector paths. Photographs, soft shadows, and complex textures belong in raster formats at sufficient effective resolution. Embedding a low-resolution photo inside SVG or PDF does not make it print-ready.

Keep linked high-resolution images organized and avoid unnecessary resampling before the final export. Review the printer's preferred color space and profile rather than applying a generic conversion at the end.

Bleed, safe area, and folds

Artwork that reaches a trimmed edge normally extends into bleed. Important text and logos stay inside the safe area. Folds, glue flaps, seams, and curved containers can change how centered artwork appears after assembly.

Create a physical mockup for complex structures. A flat screen proof cannot show every panel transition or hand-held viewing angle.

Special finishes need simple geometry

Foil, embossing, spot varnish, and white ink often use dedicated named colors or layers. Keep these shapes closed, avoid accidental transparency, and confirm whether the printer expects overprint.

Do not rely on visual blending modes to communicate a manufacturing plate. Include a production note explaining every special layer.

Export and verify

The printer may request PDF, EPS, or an application-specific package. Use SVG to PDF or SVG to EPS only for appropriate standalone artwork, then reopen the export and inspect it.

Final handoff should include:

  1. The printer's current dieline or template
  2. Editable source artwork when contractually appropriate
  3. The requested production PDF or EPS
  4. Linked images and fonts, or safely outlined text
  5. A low-resolution visual proof with notes
  6. Version and approval information

Proof the physical result

Scan codes from a printed proof. Check small reversed text, registration-sensitive lines, and color on the intended substrate. Transparent, recycled, metallic, and uncoated materials can change contrast significantly.

A technically valid vector is only one part of packaging readiness. The final proof connects the file to the real press, stock, finish, and assembly process.
